i heard somewhere software delays progress bar if user thinks software has installed or loaded quick there issue cannot find explains in further details.

something read

progress bars shouldn't based on time, should based on quantity of work. typically when marquee style of progress bar (where show animations, no actual progress), means quantity unknown. happens in lot of situations total number of steps processed unknown due data, or amount of time take calculate total number of items take long.

progress bars should different subject time estimates not same. have 100 things process, progress between 1 , 100. how long takes depends entirely upon processing. if i'm processing invoices say, how long takes depends lot on involved invoice (line items, calculations, other ups).

just because took 10 seconds process last 1 doesn't mean it's going take 10 seconds process next one. in order determine how time left, people take quantity left , multiply average time it's taken far. apply smoothing average (so doesn't jump around lot), other that, how else estimate time? if amount of time takes process items even, estimate accurate, if vastly different between items, estimate going jump on place , wildly inaccurate.
